From their development in the pre World War II era as a synthetic rubber, urethane elastomers have been extensively utilized as a cast rubber like material. Only in the past fifteen years or so has the plural component spray technology been used to pump, meter, mix, atomize and apply 100% solids urethane elastomers.

The key to application is their ability to be applied in thick coats. 100% solids urethanes are chemically curing as opposed to traditional carrier evaporation paints and coatings. This chemical cure time can be varied by adding catalyst to one of the components. Fast reacting systems can be spray applied to vertical surfaces at 200 mils per coating pass.

Since these systems are so fast curing and become very resilient and abrasion resistant, contractors need special application expertise as the cured coating is very difficult to remove from applied surfaces. This paper discusses the many varied applications of these materials and the special equipment and technicians necessary to apply the material successfully.
