Abstract
This paper documents several successful applications where electroless nickel (EN) coatings were used to solve corrosion related problems in the chemical and transportation industry. Most of the applications involve corrosion, erosion, and wear simultaneously which demonstrates the unusual ability of EN coatings to solve complex compatibility problems.
Test results show that properly selected EN coatings offer lower corrosion rates than alloy 200 under both static and velocity conditions in each of the alkaline environments evaluated. Electroless nickel was substituted for the more expensive alloy under each circumstance. The coating also offers improved corrosion resistance and product purity over stainless steel and mild steel alloys. Electroless nickel coatings were found to be an economic improvement over most materials when compared using "Equivalent Annual Cost" based on NACE standard RP-02-72.
