Abstract
This review presents a history of the use of sulfonates as corrosion inhibitors in rust preventives, lubricating oils and greases, and functional fluids. We describe the manufacturing processes used to make petroleum and synthetic sulfonates and the differences between products produced by different methods. We then discuss the formulation of products containing sulfonate corrosion inhibitors and the synergism and antagonism that can occur between active ingredients. This we relate to the mechanisms by which sulfonates inhibit corrosion. We conclude with some recent advances in sulfonate technology and the prospects for the future.
