Much can be learned about the effects of the arctic marine environment on materials by studying the archaeological artifacts from shipwrecks. The data gathered can aid industry in predicting corrosion rates of various metals and alloys as well as the environmental effects on many organic materials. The Ocean Research Center of the Arctic (O.R.C.A.) has researched and is planning to locate and recover the steam whaling ship "Orca". This large three masted ship was lost off the arctic Chukchi Sea coast of Alaska in September of 1897. This paper will present an introduction to the project by reviewing the historical data and discussing the reasons the ship "Orca" is being considered for recovery. A list of the benefits that the corrosion industry and archaeological community can expect to gain from this project will also be presented.
