Abstract
The factors affecting the behaviour of corrosion inhibitors in neutral aqueous solutions are reviewed with attention to some unexplained features. Possible mechanisms of the protective action are considered for, so-called, oxidising and non-oxidising inhibitors using the example of chromates and carboxylates respectively.
