Abstract
Different types of inhibition mechanisms are classified as interface and interphase inhibition. Interface inhibition is caused by specific adsorption of the inhibitor at the substrate surface forming a 2-D adsorbate layer sometimes of well defined structure. This type can be subdivided into geometric blocking, desactivating and reactive coverages. Interphase inhibition is caused by a 3-D protective layer between the substrate and the bulk of the electrolyte.
In this paper, experimental de and ac results are presented to illustrate the interphase inhibition and the influences of surface inhomogeneities on localized corrosion processes.
