An overview of the application of hydrogen probes for corrosion monitoring in the oil field is presented. The three basic types of hydrogen probes are described and their relative merits discussed. The construction and installation of a simple and inexpensive electrochemical hydrogen probe is described. Conoco's experiences with hydrogen probes in oil field operations are discussed, and it is concluded from these experiences that production systems where hydrogen probes can provide useful corrosion data are very limited.
