Abstract
Mining is the most dangerous industry in the United States. It also has been described as the one with the most difficult and challenging of environments. Mines and minerals processing facilities frequently are located in remote and poorly accessible locations, which makes the shipment of equipment and repair parts difficult. Underground mine environments can range from 5°C and over 90% humidity for coal mines to over 55°C and over 90% humidity in deep metal and nonmetal mines.
A number of naturally occurring elements and combinations of elements make corrosion and wear problems a daily hazard to safety and an impediment to production. Solutions to these problems, together with the ability to make simple, on-the-spot equipment inspection and repairs are of prime importance in the mining and mineral processing industry.
This paper will explore the problems of corrosion and wear, discuss causes of these problems, and highlight some of the research underway to provide solutions.
