Materials performance at the 250 ton/day EDS coal liquefaction pilot plant (ECLP) is reviewed following 10,700 hours of operation on three different coal types. Methods of materials performance assessment are discussed in conjunction with the integrated Materials Evaluation Program. Erosion/corrosion experience is presented, including discussions on preventive measures and the effect of coal type and operating mode on materials degradation. Except for isolated cases of locally severe erosion and corrosion, materials performance was satisfactory. Broad base conclusions applicable specifically to EDS are presented. Based on ECLP materials performance and test results, it is concluded that all construction materials are available to permit EDS commercialization.
