As the frontiers of energy exploration are expanded, so numerous and more stringent demands are inflicted upon the overall performance of external pipeline coatings. In an attempt to determine and define which of the presently available pipeline coatings offer the optimum protection in minimizing the risk of external pipeline corrosion, NOVA, AN ALBERTA CORPORATION, undertook a laboratory evaluation program to assess the performances of generic coating types. Comprehensive laboratory tests were implemented or designed to simulate the types of conditions that a coating would encounter during transportation, installation and operation of a pipeline facility.

The methodology of this test program, actual methods of evaluation and test results are discussed.
