Abstract
Over the past several years, many new and innovative applications have been found for thin film fluorocarbon coatings in the oil tool industry. They have been achieved through extensive research and development, and proven in lab and field testing. These fluorocarbon coatings have provided solutions to common problems in field use such as: anti-galling of threads, high bearing load capability, corrosion protection at high temperatures, wear resistance for moving parts, anti-stick characteristics, high pressure service, and where re-lubrication is difficult. Specifically the fluorocarbon coating being addressed is a composite of a polyimide resin with dispersions of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and MoS2 (molybdenum disulphide). This composite fluorocarbon material is highly dependent on a quality application to achieve it's optimum characteristics. Successful applications in the oil tool industry are being found and problems solved at an accelerated rate with the use of this composite fluorocarbon coating material coupled with a quality application.
