Abstract
This paper reviews the chemical cleaning activities at the Amuay Refinery. The cleaning methods used for exchangers on the salt water and process sides and how the cleaning requirements are influenced by the design are described. Also, experiences with boiler cleaning, both pre-commission and after service, are detailed. The pre-commission cleaning activities required for a large project are reviewed. Included in this section is a detailed description of a large vapor phase cleaning program for steam lines. This vapor phase cleaning was one of the largest jobs undertaken using this method. After refining the technique, the steam blowing required to provide a clean target was reduced to ten days. The reduction in project start-up time resulted in high savings in start-up expenses and brought forward the availability of the plant. Finally some comments are included on the organization of chemical cleaning in a refinery.
