Initiation of localized corrosion on nickel alloys 825, 904L, G and 625 in simulated SO2 scrubber environments is defined with respect to pH and chloride content at 57C (135F). The data are contrasted to field corrosion tests. A performance rating for localized corrosion resistance of the nickel alloys studied was established as 625 much better than G much better than 904L and 825, which are equivalent. The crevice pit depths of the alloys did not significantly increase as the chloride content of the simulated SO2 scrubber environments increased in the 30 day tests. All alloys showed a direct relationship of temperature on corrosion. After crevice pit initiation of INCONEL alloy 625, in a pH 5, 110,000 ppm chloride, 57C (135F) environment, pit penetration moderated with minimal propagation in 360 days. Fluorides accelerated the localized corrosion of all alloys in the simulated scrubber tests.
