Abstract
This paper summarizes procedures and materials employed in manhole and underground plant construction in the Bell System from the turn of the century to the present. It places particular emphasis on current construction for the benefit of those interested in evaluating and alleviating corrosion problems which may be related to a specific construction or the associated environment. Concerning manholes, the discussion covers: (1) construction type and details, (2) the materials used, such as cement and reinforcing rods, (3) concrete cover as specified by the applicable ACI code, (4) design loads and (5) structural penetrations such as duct terminators and personnel entranceways. Also described are the hardware for mounting various internal equipment and the apparatus cases and splice closures. Conduit construction and materials as well as common cable jacket materials are discussed. Bonding and grounding methods and details are described including the effectiveness of the concrete structure itself acting as a ground. Finally, the environment to be expected within the manhole as affected by water or contaminant presence is discussed.
