Abstract
A recessionary economy requires re-evaluation of priorities not only in regard to capital investment (plant expansions), but reassessment of maintenance requirements within existing facilities. Maintenance painting schedules are frequently trimmed to include only critical structures and equipment. Consequently, it is imperative that the corrosion engineer or maintenance superintendent properly identify and neutralize corrosion problems that may threaten employee safety, structural integrity, or productivity. A corrosion survey documents significant observations and measurements pertaining to the corrosion process and those materials used to inhibit corrosion. The corrosion survey can assist the engineer in specifying proper coating products, and coating work can be accomplished within budgetary constraints. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest a practical model for the corrosion survey.
