Abstract
The past twenty years have seen dramatic changes in cooling water technology. The need to conserve water, avoid toxic chemicals, and meet effluent regulations has prompted the development of new and innovative approaches to cooling water treatment. This paper reviews basic mechanisms and control procedures, and explains why operating changes have required new approaches to solve problems. Modern cooling water programs are reviewed in perspective, and future needs for new technology are discussed.
