Abstract
The use of the Scanning Electron Microscope and the Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analyzer in the study of coatings/substrate defects and problems is demonstrated. Examples discussed include the morphology and elemental analysis of surface treatments and substrates both unexposed and exposed to various environments and mechanical tests. Miscellaneous coatings/substrate problems such as mildew and interior can corrosion and defects in clear coatings on metal substrates are shown.
