Overall, there have been very few materials problems in spent fuel pools. The component materials are generally corrosion resistant in the relatively low temperatures and benign coolants. Current projections suggest that spent fuel pools will be an important link in spent fuel management for the next several decades. Therefore, this program is directed toward an improved definition and documentation of the behavior of materials in the spent fuel pool environments to:
- ◦
Investigate operator experience which suggests that very little significant corrosion occurs on spent fuel pool materials, and,
- ◦
Further define the few cases where significant corrosion has been observed.
These studies will provide guidance to fuel pool designers and operators regarding materials selection and fabrication variables, particularly stainless steel alloy selection and weld parameters. The results also will provide a basis for responding to questions from licensing agencies regarding spent fuel pool materials.
