Abstract
High voltage direct current transmission is becoming very attractive to power companies because of the savings on construction and maintenance cost. With the advent of HVDC systems, the underground operators such as, pipeline, telephone, power and railroad companies have found that Monopolar Operation can and does seriously affect pipeline systems. Details on the effect's and what soluations have been used are examined for the cathodically protected Amoco Pipeline. This pipeline's closest point to the HVDC East ground electrode, is 13 miles and parallels the power line for approximately 550 miles.
