Under the sponsorship of Rockwell International Corporation and DOE, the Energy Systems Group of Rockwell International Corporation, has developed a single stage short-residence time reactor for gasification of coal. During the process demonstration runs, specimens were exposed in the product gas and char environment in the exit port of the 18-ton per day engineering-scale coal gasification reactor. Based on the materials corrosion/erosion data developed from the engineering-scale testing, TZM, KT-SiC, Inconel 617, Haynes 188, Inconel 671 and Inconel 657 exhibited good resistance to the high Btu product gas and char environment. Udimet 500 and Hastelloy X showed intermediate corrosion resistance, while the ferrous alloys (Incoloy 800, Type 310 SS, Cru-temp 25, 317 LM, and RA 330) displayed high corrosion.
