Union Carbide experience, supported by that of others, suggests that maximum savings in the use of zinc-base painting systems are obtained by pre-erection priming and a deferred top-coat. The application of a vinyl top-coat may be deferred for at least 5 years where an inorganic zinc primer is used and up to 10 years where hot-dip galvanizing is employed, with significant attendant savings (e.g. 20% of the painting costs).
