The F-15 Eagle was designed by McDonnell Aircraft (MCAIR) to meet the Air Force requirements for an air superiority fighter. The high engine thrust to aircraft weight ratio combined with large control surfaces and light wing loading give the F-15 unexcelled maneuvering capabilities. The F-15 is armed with a 20 mm cannon as standard equipment which is supplemented by four advanced Sparrow radar missiles. The Eagle made its first flight on 27 July 72. After 20 test aircraft had completed some 3,500 test flights without any major mishaps, the first operational aircraft was accepted by the Tactical Air Command on 14 Nov 74.
