The purpose of this paper is to report and document the unusual morphology of corrosion failures occurring in austenitic- stainless-steel, shop-and-field pipe welds in the brine-heater piping systems of two 1.00 million gallon per day (GPD) multistage flash desalination plants at St. Croix, V. I. The unfortunate combination of cavernous pitting and stress-corrosion cracking of the weld area resulted in relatively rapid failure of the "as welded" connections with essentially no corrosion attack in the base metal or the solution-annealed longitudinal welds. Failure occurred rapidly within the first six months of operation.
