Desulfurization of the exhaust gas from the sintering plant constitutes one of the most important items in the pollution control activities in the steel industry, since approximately 50 % of sulfur dioxide generated from a steel works originates from the sintering plant. In January 1972, a 150, 000 Nm3/hr prototype desulfurization plant was completed in the Keihin Works of Nippon Kokan under the sponsorship of Committee on Environmental Pollution, Japan Iron and Steel Federation. The desulfurization plant was operated for 2 years to obtain data on operational parameters.
