In the course of scrubbing coal combustion flue gases, there result problems of compatability between environment and material of construction. When the sulfur oxide content of these gases is contacted with alkaline absorbents, the problems are diminished but by no means eliminated. The absorbent used in the process described here is limestone in the form of a suspension in water.
