In previous publications (Ref. 1,2,3,4) corrosion studies of galvanized steel, steel, 409 stainless steel and copper bearing metals were conducted in test assemblies in the laboratory and in State institutional hot water systems. It was found that these laboratory test units, designed like institutional systems in respect to (1) ratio of surface area to capacity (ft2/gal), (2) time required for the system volume to make a complete circuit in the system (avg. hrs.), and (3) time required for complete replacement with fresh make-up water (hrs.) provided equivalent corrosion rates to the results in the large institutional systems. Accordingly in this study, a twelve unit laboratory system following this design was constructed and has provided the advantages of conducting twelve simultaneous tests on the same water supply with controlled water treatments, in which pH and silica has been varied.
