EU Contest Seeks Anticorrosion Demonstration Projects in North Sea Free

A competition designed to connect project developers in the offshore renewables industry with supply chain companies in the offshore sector across Europe was recently launched by the European Union’s (EU) North Sea Solutions for Innovation in Corrosion for Energy (NeSSIE) project.

According to NeSSIE officials, the competition is designed to develop commercial solutions for corrosion and materials challenges in offshore renewables through demonstration projects in the North Sea. The project is financially backed by the EU’s European Commission (Brussels, Belgium).

The competition’s first stage, which opened on June 6, 2018, and closes on August 7, 2018, will result in the selection of three companies to deploy their anticorrosion demonstration projects.

The companies chosen from the first stage will then move onto a second stage, in which they will collaborate with supply chain partners across Europe; put together business cases for each project; and identify potential funding package to deliver the projects.

“The partners in NeSSIE come from cluster organizations, research institutes, and economic development agencies from Scotland, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Spain, with good links to developers and supply chain companies in offshore sectors,” says Bart Teerlink, a representative of technology nonprofit group SIRRIS (Brussels, Belgium).

“We believe that using a competitive approach will help encourage the leading developers in the offshore renewables industry to get involved, and this in turn will attract the most innovative supply chain companies from our regions to support the delivery of the demonstration projects,” he adds.
