Elsevier Launches New Corrosion Management Tool Free

October 6, 2021

Elsevier (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), a global leader in research publishing and information analytics, launched Knovel Corrosion, a corrosion management tool that addresses critical material selection and corrosion failure analysis needs with reliable answers.

According to a recent NACE IMPACT study, corrosion currently costs the global economy $2.5 trillion USD annually, and also adds that companies could save up to 35% of that cost with better corrosion management. To that end, Knovel Corrosion will help engineers and asset managers with a range of coverage that includes metals, plastics, elastomers, and coatings, along with over 1,300 real world case studies and over five million corrosion-rate and resistance-data points.

“Despite the significant economic impact of poorly managed corrosion each year, the culture at many organizations still assumes a reactive stance to corrosion management,” says Jim Harper, senior product manager for Knovel at Elsevier. “If corrosion were more top of mind during materials selection, design and development, companies could mitigate the impact of corrosion and manage it better when it does occur.”

“Knovel Corrosion is particularly helpful for those in chemical manufacturing, petrochemicals and process manufacturing with highly diverse environments where high numbers of corrosive media are likely to be running through equipment for extended periods of time,” adds Harper. “The tool provides detailed data for material selection and problem resolution to empower informed decision making across the enterprise.”

With Knovel Corrosion, engineers and asset managers can increase asset integrity and plant efficiency, reduce downtime and testing rounds, improve safety and lower operational risk, and conduct failure analysis and develop mitigation plans.

“Knovel Corrosion helps to foster a culture focused on corrosion management,” says Harper. “By establishing a common language, it enables technical communication and collaboration across the organization, from engineers and scientists to corrosion specialists. Engineers can use the tool to investigate and understand how resistant different materials are to corrosion under various conditions, while utilizing case studies to identify potential issues before they surface.”

Knovel Corrosion is an add-on module to Knovel, an engineering decision support solution that helps engineers solve complex problems efficiently to enhance business performance. Knovel contains in-depth technical references and content from a variety of organizations, including the former NACE (now ASSP), ASM, Wiley, Elsevier, EFC, CRC, and the Nickel Institute. According to Elsevier, Knovel Corrosion will be consistently updated as new content becomes available, including a galvanic compatibility tool set to debut in 2022.
