Understanding the Impact of Corrosion: A Global Call to Action Free

April 30, 2025

The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) is partnering with the World Corrosion Organization (WCO) and the European Federation of Corrosion (EFC) for World Corrosion Awareness Day (WCAD) 2025.

This annual campaign unites professionals, industries, and researchers in raising awareness about the often-overlooked but critically important corrosion issue.

Corrosion is a worldwide challenge, impacting infrastructure, energy, transportation, and water systems. If left unchecked, it leads to serious safety risks, environmental concerns, and financial losses exceeding $2.5 trillion annually.

World Corrosion Awareness Day seeks to bring attention to these challenges and promote effective corrosion control measures.

WCAD 2025: A Collaborative Effort

World Corrosion Awareness Day is an initiative created by the WCO to highlight the importance of corrosion prevention.

In collaboration with AMPP and EFC, this year's WCAD will once again engage professionals, researchers, and organizations worldwide in a collective effort to promote best practices and innovative solutions in corrosion control.

How You Can Participate in WCAD 2025

AMPP encourages engineers, scientists, policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to participate by sharing insights, experiences, and real-world examples of corrosion's impact and prevention strategies.

Ways to Get Involved

  • Host or attend webinars focused on corrosion prevention in your industry.
  • Share case studies or success stories demonstrating the value of proactive corrosion management.
  • Organize educational events or workshops to teach others about the importance of corrosion control.
  • Engage on social media using campaign hashtags and templates.

Suggested Topics, Hashtags

  • #CorrosionInEverydayLife — Showcase corrosion examples and discuss their real-world impact
  • #CorrosionFreeFuture — Imagine a future with better corrosion prevention strategies
  • #WCAD2025 — Support global efforts in corrosion awareness

Use these customizable social media templates to amplify your message.

Join the #CorrosionInEverydayLife Scavenger Hunt

As part of WCAD 2025, AMPP invites the industry to participate in the Corrosion Scavenger Hunt—a fun and interactive way to raise awareness.

How to Participate

Find and photograph these six examples of real-world corrosion:

  • Rusted Boundaries: Corrosion on metal fences or railings;
  • Auto Oxidation: Rust on vehicles;
  • Sticky Hinges: Rusted door hinges, handles, or locks;
  • Under Pressure: Corroded pipes, sprinkler systems, or HVAC;
  • Rusty Connections: Corroded fasteners on outdoor structures;
  • Flaking Failures: Peeling, bubbling, or cracking paint from corrosion.

Create a collage, video, or post featuring your finds, and use the hashtag #CorrosionInEverydayLife and tag AMPP.

Submit Your Entry

Deadline: April 30, 2025, at 11:59 PM CST

Prizes: Two winners will receive a corrosion-inspired art print by Jean Kittel, a Lyon-based researcher and artist.

Open to ages 18+ worldwide—one entry per person. By entering, you allow AMPP to share your content with credit.

Why Corrosion Awareness Matters

Corrosion is more than rust—it’s a serious issue affecting our daily lives, economy, and future. Here’s why it matters:

Economic Impact

Corrosion costs the global economy over $2.5 trillion annually, from repairing bridges to replacing water pipes and damaged equipment. We could reduce those costs by up to 35% by preventing corrosion early.

Infrastructure and Public Safety

From roads and bridges to water systems and power plants, corrosion weakens the infrastructure we rely on daily. Prevention helps keep our homes, communities, and transportation systems safe and reliable.

National Security

Military equipment, naval ships, and defense infrastructure are all corrosion-resistant. Protecting these critical systems ensures combat readiness and protects those who serve.

Sustainability and Innovation

New technologies—like eco-friendly coatings and advanced materials—make fighting corrosion smarter and more sustainable. These innovations help reduce waste, save energy, and protect our environment for future generations.

Be Part of the Movement

By raising awareness, we can:

  • Foster collaboration across industries.
  • Inform policymakers and shape better regulations.
  • Support ongoing research and innovation.

Take Action Today!

  • Share your knowledge.
  • Join WCAD events.
  • Advocate for corrosion prevention in your community.
  • Learn more by visiting www.corrosion.org.
