Recent studies indicate that to correctly assess the resistance to SCC and HIC of tensile flexible pipelines armors, standardized tests, such as NACE 0177, are not the best alternative once those tests can not represent the very peculiar environment of the annular space; the concentration of Fe2+ ions increase rapidly due to the high degree of confinement, thus increasing the pH of the medium in contact with the steel. Previous work1,2,3 indicates that the concentration of H2S to be considered in the tests must be in accordance with the concentration of H2S that permeates the polymeric barrier and effectively reaches the tensile armor in the annular region; therefore, it is necessary to develop a test methodology to represent such environment to quantify the H2S concentration and estimate the actual HIC/SSC potential harm to high strength steel.
