The Fontana Corrosion Center at The Ohio State University

The Fontana Corrosion Center (FCC) currently includes four professors: Gerald Frankel, Jenifer Locke, Narasi Sridhar, and Christopher Taylor. The research in the FCC covers a wide-ranging spectrum of corrosion subjects. Broadly, they seek to understand the fundamental mechanisms of corrosion and corrosion protection. Research at present focuses on the effects of microstructure on corrosion, the mechanisms and efficacy of environment-friendly inhibitors, new theories for localized corrosion, corrosion rates and mechanisms for highly corrosion resistant alloys, prediction of corrosion damage accumulation, the combined effects of mechanical stress and the environment in studies of corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking, first principles modeling of corrosion mechanisms, the consequences of galvanic interactions, the mechanisms of metal- or inhibiter-loaded organic coatings, and other aspects of corrosion. The FCC is the lead organization in a multi-institutional DOE-funded Energy Frontier Research Center called WastePD, which is focused on the corrosion of metal, glass, and ceramic waste forms relevant to long-term nuclear waste disposal.
