Research articles

Original research papers should emphasize important advances beyond present knowledge and research findings where significant variables have been systemically measured and interpreted. Significant and impactful original research with a compelling need, gap, or opportunity developed in the introduction with supporting citations, strong statistical support for observation, along with scientific diagnostics to enrich interpretations should be included. Research papers may be organized into Corrosion Science or Engineering Sections at the discretion of the Technical Editor in Chief. Science papers should address theory and mechanisms, while engineering papers may discuss testing and evaluation to provide data of engineering significance.

Length: Up to 10 pages in layout (30 double-spaced pages submitted with all figures, tables, text, and references).

Technical notes

Technical notes are self-contained short contributions that announce a significant new finding of a permanent value addressing a gap in corrosion science or engineering knowledge. A technical note can address a new alloy, treatment, coating, or environment provided it is established that no scientific report in an archival journal or published data exists elsewhere on the same topic. Statistical support for data is expected as in a full-length paper.

Length: 2-3 pages in layout (7-9 double-spaced pages including all text, figures, tables, and references).

Corrosion communications

These short papers are self-contained investigations that are given an expedited review (reviewed within 14 days) and, if accepted, published in the next available issue. The research should go beyond solely providing new data on a new coating or alloy and should report an extremely significant, time sensitive, and/or novel set of results, computations, experimental or quantitative methods, functional materials, or corrosion theories. They can also focus on a new area of research or considerably unique insight into a corrosion issue. The novelty and time sensitivity must be compelling and described in the cover letter.

Length: 2-3 pages in layout (6-9 double-spaced pages including all text, figures, tables, and references).

Scientific investigation of field corrosion events

These papers quantitatively characterize or describe a field corrosion process and present comprehensive laboratory-based experimental, computational, or theoretical analysis with significant new scientific content that is instrumental in characterizing, interpreting, understanding, and managing such corrosion events or phenomena in the field. Failure analysis reports are not suitable for CORROSION.

Length: Up to 10 pages in layout (30 double-spaced pages submitted with all figures, tables, text, and references.)

Review articles and invited critical reviews

These full-length articles should provide critical reviews of specific portions of literature. The primary emphasis of a review paper should be to provide a synthesis of state of the art experimental and theoretical knowledge from the literature, as well as the author’s own work, and a criticism of weaknesses in existing data and interpretations. Multiple competing theories or mechanism should be discussed with a balanced view, and may capture the state of the art on a given topic with extensive references and identify the key progress, critical issues, and future direction. Key figures or plots from other sources may be reproduced provided copyright permission is obtained by the author. The Technical Editor in Chief selects or initiates requests for Invited Critical Reviews.

Length: Up to 30 pages in layout (75-90 double-spaced pages submitted with all figures, tables, text, and references).

Other article types

CORROSION also publishes a variety of invited articles, including (but not limited to) Poster Research Letters, Special Issue articles, Perspectives on Classic Articles, and Guest Editorials. Specific article requirements will be sent with the invitation to publish.
