Mr. Chairman, Officers of the NACE, Members, and Guests: As you know, your President has asked that I make a speech. He has also imposed some restrictions on what I should say—it has to be short, it has to be clean, it cannot be technical, no title was suggested and it ought to be good. These restrictions do not bother me in the least and I consider it a great privilege to say a few words to this group that includes many of my best friends.

My activities in corrosion work have been similar to those of many of you. Most of the time I have been employed by organizations that own or operate large metallic structures that are considered important.
