Stress Corrosion Cracking in Alkaline Solutions. TP 5C-Sub-Surface Corrosion by Alkaline Solutions, By H. W. Schmidt, P. J. Gegner, C. F. Pogacar and E. H. Wyche. Corrosion, 7, No. 9, 295-302 (1951) September.
In view of your data showing failures of steel tanks at temperatures below about 130 degrees F in 30 percent caustic is it in your opinion a safe assumption that storage tanks at ambient temperatures need not be stress-relieved for 30 percent caustic service?
From the available data and experience it can be concluded that storage tanks containing 30 percent caustic at around room temperature need not be stress-relieved.
Where did failures occur in vessels cracking after several years’ service? Could these failures have occurred because of support failure causing high stresses in tank?
Failures occur at or near a weld or in an area subject to high stress. We do not believe failures occurred because...
