Three historical corrosion issues from the pulp and paper sector are presented, where the critical damage mechanisms have been identified along with the ways they were avoided. Caustic cracking of kraft mill digesters, pitting and crevice corrosion of stainless steels in oxidizing acid chloride bleach plant environments, and paper machine corrosion mechanisms are detailed. In paper machines, thiosulfate corrosion of bronze, along with pitting and stress corrosion of stainless steels, are described. Interactions with university and industry partners are outlined where enhanced theoretical interpretation and fast commercialization of solutions were invaluable.
