The Mössbauer effect was used to study the formation of the rust layer of Q235A steel formed in different marine zones. Analysis of Mössbauer spectra provided useful information, such as composition of the rust layer in different zones and the difference in content between the inner rust layer and the outer rust layer in one zone. The corrosion process in the rust layer is also discussed. Unstable iron(II) hydroxide (Fe[OH]2) and green rusts were the intermediate corrosion products found in the rust layer. Their oxidization and dehydration are possible sources of magnetite (Fe3O4) in the rust layers formed in the immersion and sea mud zones.
