Anodic polarization behavior of electroslag-refined cast iron aluminide having the composition of Fe-16Al-0.14C was studied in 0.25 M sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The anodic polarization curve displayed a secondary anodic peak in the pre-passivation region, which has not been reported in the literature, before reaching the broad passive region. The films formed at the passive potential of 1 V vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE) and at the pre-passivation potential of –0.35 VSCE were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At these potentials, both Al and Fe were found to be present in the films formed by the alloy with a marginal variation in Al/Fe ratio. In addition, Cu was found to exist on the aluminide surface at –0.35 VSCE.
