The concept of activation energy is used often as a guide in studies intended to elucidate mechanisms of complex corrosion phenomena, but it is a concept prone to misinterpretation. In the present work, the limits of deductions based on activation energy were studied. It was shown that, if sufficient care is taken, comparisons of activation energies can help in the search for a rate law expressed in terms of relevant physicochemical parameters.
