Susceptibility of various iron-boron-silicon metallic glasses to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) was studied. Testing was carried out on thin metallic ribbons of Fe78B 13Si9Fe81B13.5Si3.5C2, Fe66Co18B15Si1, Fe77Cr2B16Si5, and Fe40Ni38Mo4B18 in 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions at room temperature. Tests were performed under constant strain conditions until complete separation of the ribbons occurred. Typical fractographic techniques indicated susceptibility to SCC of all the glasses, except Fe40Ni38Mo4B18 varied only as a function of the amplitude of the strain. Susceptibility was independent of the solution concentration and the addition of carbon, chromium, and cobalt to the glass. Results indicated Fe40Ni38Mo4B18 was not suspceptible to SCC in HCL solutions at different strain amplitudes.
