Under laboratory conditions, electrode potential and pH values generated during crack tip dissolution are measured on stress corrosion cracks in metals in 3% NaCl solution. Metal dissolution in the crack tip is accompanied by hydrogen depolarization and hydrogen release. Hydrogen depolarization is the main depolarization reaction. An effort is made to reduce the crack growth by inhibiting hydrogen depolarization using CH3COONa salt.
