This work is concerned with the blistering mechanisms of thermally sprayed zinc or Zn-Al alloy metallic coatings on the aluminium alloy 5086 in seawater. It was found that the blistering was due to the accumulation of corrosion products within the coating and especially to the formation of zinc oxychloride, which is produced preferentially at high pH in the solution confined in the coating. A pretreatment gave a favorable effect against blistering probably because of a pore blocking effect by the calcareous deposits.
