An apparatus has been designed that permits separation of the wear and corrosion components of wear corrosion. A loaded ruby ball describes a circular track on a sheet specimen in a corrosion environment, with and without cathodic protection applied to the specimen to produce wear and wear corrosion, respectively. Profilometer traces of the tracks measure the metal removed in the two cases. Preliminary results on type 304 stainless steel demonstrate the validity of the technique.
