This paper reviews prominent investigations of magnetite formation and internal corrosion in boilers. This review includes publications that have been cited extensively in the past few years, as well as some important recent contributions to the subject. The classic proposals of Potter and Mann4,6-8  regarding magnetite formation in boilers are summarized and contrasted with some more recently suggested mechanisms. Following this, a brief description of the various pathways of internal boiler corrosion is presented.
