Corrosion of a Ni40Co20Cr12Mo6Fe6B16 amorphous alloy in deaerated sulfuric acid was evaluated by potentiostatic polarization measurements. Effects of acid concentration, sequence of polarization, and presence of Cl– ions in the acid on the polarization curves were determined. From these it was deduced that the amorphous alloy has very good corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid media, better than that of several stainless steels and nickel base alloys. This alloy passivates spontaneously in deaerated sulfuric acid, and transpassive dissolution of the alloy leads to better protection within the passive potential range. The present alloy exhibits remarkable resistance to pitting in Cl– containing sulfuric acid, but is susceptible to crevice corrosion.
