The prosecution of research on the corrosion of metals was one of the earliest activities of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, by whom a Corrosion Research Committee was set up in 1924 with the late G. D. Bengough as its senior investigator until 1936. This survey, the first since the war, covers the period from 19391 to date. Most of the work has been concerned with specific war-time problems.
The High-Speed Rotor Apparatus2 is based on researches carried out in the Section prior to the period under review; it was originally designed to investigate the corrosion resistance of unpainted metals to fresh waters or sea water under conditions of rapid movement.
