Soluble silicates can be and, in some cases, are being-used to inhibit corrosion, from the preliminaries of crude oil production to the delivery systems of the finished petroleum products. Sodium silicates are so inexpensive and yet so effective that the wonder is not that they are widely used, but why they are not used by many others in the oil industry. While soluble silicates is not the answer for all corrosion, problems, it certainly is for a number of them. It sometimes seems that the low cost of the silicates is what prevents them from being more widely used. Certainly the silicate manufacturer is limited in his promotional activities by the small profits available. However, if the failure to use silicates is due to lack of knowledge, it is hoped this paper will offer evidence to enable others to use them.
