Corrosion of chimney liners due to condensation in chimneys where gas is used as a fuel has been long a problem confronting the gas industry. With conflicting statements coming from both the field and the laboratory, much confusion can arise. Therefore, the intent of this article is to present data on our experiences with chimney lines to serve as a guide to anyone interested in the distribution of a similar type of gas.

As of December 31, 1946, Minneapolis and its suburbs had 41,720 installed heating jobs on its distribution system. This represents a saturation of about 30 percent and should provide enough field data to eliminate some of the conflicting statements concerning chimney liners.

Prior to 1936, the chimney flue, into which gas heating was vented, was sprayed with asphalt chromate emulsion. This was not satisfactory because adhesion was not good on dirty or wet surfaces. In 1936, Wilder...
