The environmental conditions leading to pitting and crevice corrosion have been measured for a typical 12% Cr low-pressure steam turbine blade material in chloride solutions at 80 C. For the particular geometry used, no pitting and no crevice corrosion occurs only in deaerated solutions containing a chloride ion concentration less than about 2 × 10−4 N. Comparison with previous studies showed that the severity of the corrosion conditions depend on the experimental geometry.
