A fracture feature common to hydrogen embrittlement failures of low strength steels is described. Flat fracture regions or zones spanning several prior austenite grains have been noted by several authors and these observations are compiled to aid in further investigation of these zones. Understanding of these zones and how they are formed may provide the key to hydrogen cracking resistance of low strength steels.
