The corrosion research at these laboratories is aimed at increasing the reliability and lengthening the safe service life of military equipment. Materials Research Laboratories is one of the major scientific establishments within the Department of Defense. Corrosion research is conducted in the metallurgy division and includes aqueous and high temperature corrosion studies and environmentally induced cracking.

Jeff Batten is head of the Electrochemistry Group which specializes in aqueous corrosion and electroplating studies, including both research and consulting activities for the Department.
